What is rosacea?
A chronic condition that usually pertains the face and the eyes. Characterised by redness, flushing, and burning or tightness on the skin. It can look like a red butterfly across the cheeks, nose and forehead. It is commonly mistaken for acne this condition is not the same as acne and has some distinct differences.
There is no known cause for rosacea but there are triggers which lead to irritation and flare ups. Everyone will have different markers for the flare ups, what may irritate one person may not have any effect in another. There are different theories for the cause of rosacea and there are those that are more likely to suffer rosacea for example women over the age of thirty, women are usually affected earlier than men. It occurs most frequently in Caucasian women with fair skin, there can be a genetic predisposition.
Types of rosacea
There are four types of rosacea and of theses there are three grades from mild, moderate or severe.
1. Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea
2. Papulopustular rosacea
3. Ocular rosacea
4. Phymatous rosacea (rhinophyma) – effects men
Triggers for rosacea
· Temperature changes (heat/cold)
· Spicy foods
· Alcohol (especially wine)
· Acidic diet
· Exercise (internal heat increases inflammation in the skin)
· Stress/anxiety
· Sun exposure
